The impetus behind this work came about from the enthusiasm for creative pursuits that children of the ages 2-7 normally exhibit (the so-called golden age of childhood art.) By involving the whole family in various projects from painting, drawing, printmaking, to video and sound recordings, our aim is to examine and record the interactions between the adult creative mind and the child's. These projects often involve chance through the use of playful markmaking, explorations of sound and musical instruments, and improvised storytelling.
SFAI's MFA Graduate Show at the Winery was a great success. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and chatted or left a note in the guestbook.
When my young son, around the age of two, began showing interest in making marks and scribbles, I soon recognized that the qualities of an untrained hand could meld with my own sense of sophistication and control. My recent work involves setting up situations that allow his continuously evolving handwork to directly encounter mine and to both disrupt and collaborate with it. The result is a fusion of differing skills, desires, and levels of artistic awareness that speaks of inter-generational imprinting. By authoring the work in a way that resists the notions of a singular creator of artistic genius, as well as presenting forms of documentation, such as video, alongside the paintings and prints, I invite the viewer to question how creative acts intersect with our preconceived definitions of "art" and "artist."
